Even though we’ve long since reached the 21st century, you can still get a delicious taste of the past at Payne’s Soda Fountain. It’s been a local staple of Scottsboro for 150 years—and for good reason! Locals and town visitors alike have all come over for a delicious drink or snack. So go ahead—dig into the fascinating history!
The full name of Payne’s Soda Fountain is actually Payne’s Soda Fountain & Sandwich Shop. It’s been around since 1869! That makes it older than our great town by a full year!
It can trace its origins back to its namesake, William Henry Payne. He actually started the business out as a drug store, but it still served soda. In fact, you wouldn’t have sodas without pharmacies. Many pharmacists would mix up special sodas that included drugs thought to keep people healthy. You may even recognize one: Dr. John Stith Pemberton, who invented Coca-Cola. That makes Payne’s Soda Fountain a part of a fascinating tradition.
In 1891, after a few previous moves, Payne’s pharmacy found its home in the place people still visit to this day for their sodas. Though the pharmacy stopped its operations 100 years later, the soda fountain is still going strong.
Today you can visit it and find all kinds of treats. Whether you want a sandwich, a milkshake, a hot dog, or, of course, a soda, you can choose from a wide array of delicious options. Don’t forget to try out the famous Red Slaw Dog, which is known by foodies across the state!
