Local Spotlight: Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County

Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County

Our veterans bleed red, white, and blue—and commemorating their service is our duty. That’s the cornerstone beneath the founding of the Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County. This six-acre tract of land has become an ongoing project to remember our most revered citizens.

The Park’s Origins

The Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County traces its roots back to the summer of 2014. At that time, a Korean War-era tank came into the possession of Scottsboro Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The tank sat on land beside the VFW property and the American Legion Post Home.

As the tank moved to its spot in Scottsboro, the veterans deliberated on a park for all of Jackson County devoted to military displays and veteran memorabilia. As a result, the Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County came into being.

A committee, along with city officials, began a plan for the park. One year later, in July 2015, a nonprofit for the Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County was set up. The city and committee would repurpose the six-acres of veteran-owned land as a public park.

Moving Ground

Construction for the park commenced on Memorial Day 2016. Weather stalled some progress; however, earthwork rumbled on.

Construction on the Monument Circle star started in October 2017. After that, the ensuing January marked the commemorative star’s completion. Park designers buried sands from foreign beaches beneath the star’s midsection.

In the spring of 2019, park builders erected the Honor Wall, along with monuments honoring the five service branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County plans to include more walkways, displays, and a pavilion—and to put the finishing touches on the park’s landscaping in the future.
