For starters, let’s look at one that’s fairly close to home.

Sauta Cave

Located in the Sauta Cave National Wildlife Refuge, this cave is about seven miles outside of Scottsboro. This noteworthy cave happens to be one of the most unique in our state.

Why, you ask? Because it’s home to the world’s largest group of endangered gray bats. In fact, if you happen to visit in the summer months, you may see the night sky covered in a blanket of 300,000 bats!

Limrock Blowing Cave Preserve

Limrock Blowing Cave happens to be Alabama’s 15th longest cave. It also happens to be known as a wet cave due to the 3-mile stream inside. It features a spacious walking path, cool rooms and formations.

The preserve, which is about a 14-minute drive from Scottsboro, also provides scenic views with plenty of bird-watching opportunities too.

Stephen’s Gap Callahan Cave Preserve

Another one of the most visited caves in Jackson County, Alabama, is Stephen’s Gap. The more adventurous cave explorers can test their vertical caving skills on the impressive 143-foot pit wall leading into the cave.

However, there is a walk-in entrance offering safe access foranyone. Plus, visitors will be delighted by the cave’s waterfall, which gives it the distinction of being one of the most photographed caves in the country!
